Ankaran Advances to Slovenia Green Destination Silver
The destination of Ankaran has advanced from the Bronze to the Slovenia Green Destination Silver label following a re-evaluation within the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism. This represents an important recognition of the destination’s sustainable development and its systematic efforts in the fields of nature protection, cultural preservation, and quality visitor experiences.
The assessment, carried out for the Slovenian Tourist Board by the accredited partner GoodPlace – Zavod Tovarna trajnostnega turizma GoodPlace, included a field visit on February 23, 2026. The final evaluation considered both the data entered into the Slovenia Green platform and the findings from the on-site visit.
The destination achieved outstanding results in the field of culture and tradition (9 out of 10), confirming a strategic approach to preserving both tangible and intangible heritage. A high score (8.8 out of 10) was also achieved in the area of nature and landscape. The greatest progress was recorded in destination management, significantly supported by the establishment of the Public Institute for Nature and Society Ankaran, staff reorganization, and the active work of the green coordinator.
Highlighted best practices include the initiative “Become an Ally of the Debeli rtič Landscape Park,” the sustainably designed St. Martin’s celebration in Ankaran, and a system of biodegradable bag dispensers for households.
The Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism, under the umbrella brand Slovenia Green, brings together efforts to promote sustainable tourism development in Slovenia and enables destinations to systematically improve their sustainability management.
Advancing to the Silver label confirms that Ankaran is developing its natural and cultural heritage responsibly while offering high-quality and sustainable experiences to its visitors.
